Vaccination For Adult Women and Adolesent Girls

Fact of about adult immunization

  1. Each year on average in the U.S. about die from vaccine preventable diseases or their complications.

    • An estimated 1.25 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B and can infect household members.

    • Hepatitis B vaccine is recognized as the first anti-cancer vaccine because it can prevent primary liver cancer caused by chronic HBV infection.

  2. By age 80% of women will be infected with human pappillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer.

  3. Hepatitis A is the most common vaccine –preventable disease acquired during travel.     

    • Almost all reported cases of tetanus occur in persons who either have never been vaccinated or who completed their primary series but have not had a booster vaccination the past 10 years.

    • Nearly one every 10 people who get diphtheria will die from it.

    • Almost one- third cases of whooping cough are adults.

    • If rubella occur during pregnancy it can result in severe birth defects, miscarriages and still births.

    • Serious complications of mumps are common among adults than children.

    • Adolescents are more likely then children to develop severe complications when infected with chicken pox and are also more likely to die from chicken pox then are children.

In India, coverage of immunization is not 100%. 50% of girls who are adolescent never had complete immunization keeping that in mind. This campaign of vaccination for adult women and adolescent girls is started.

Rubella Vaccination
Rubella infection if occurs in pregnancy is very bad and lethal for growing baby.50% children are malformed, if infection occurs in first 3 months of pregnancy. Doctor find it is very difficult to pickup infection clinically. Blood test can only help the women, that is why it is routinely done in good private gynae clinic/ hospital.

It is recommended that unmarried girls should be vaccinated  prior to marriage or prior to planning the child. Every parents should feel responsible for the same.

  1. I would like to get vaccinated to avoid getting problem of malformed child
  2. I am age 15 year old or more and have not had MMR.
  3. I will like to become pregnant in next 6 months. I do not know if I am immune to rubella.

Carcinoma Cervix Vaccination
Carcinoma cervix is the commonest cancers in women in India. Nearly 30-35% women with cancers have cervical cancer. This cancer is caused by human papilloma virus in 100% cases. Now vaccination is  given to unexposed girl to sex prior to 26 years, this can eliminate cervical cancer. This vaccine is now available in India. 3 doses of vaccination are required.

Tetanus Diphtheria and Pertussis - Containing Vaccination (e-g. DTP, DTaP, Tdap or Tb)

  • I am younger than age 65 years and have not had a pertussis containing vaccine as an adult
  • I have or will have close contact with a child younger than age 12 months and have not had a pertussis containing vaccine as an adolescent or adult.
  • I have not yet had at least 3 tetanus and diphtheria containing shots.
  • I have had at least 3 tetanus and diphtheria containing shots in my lifetime, but I believe it’s 10 years or more since I received my last shot.
  • I have no idea if I every received any tetanus –and diphtheria –containing shots in school time or elsewhere.
All the world over injection T.D. is now used instead of injection T.T. of during pregnancy.

Hepatitis A Vaccination
Hepatitis infection is a menace in India. Infection route is oral.

  • I wish to receive hepatitis A vaccine to be protected against hepatitis A.
  • I am in one of the following risk group, and I haven’t completed the 2-dose vaccination series against hepatitis A
  • I travel in countries others then the U.S. western Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia and new Zealand.
  • I have chronic liver disease.
  • I have a clotting factor disorder

HEPATITIS B vaccination

Hepatitis B infection, kills more people than HIV cases. Every 12th person is a carrier of this infection.

We Indians should ignore vaccination for Hepatitis B

  • I wish to receive to hepatitis B vaccine to be protected against hepatitis B
  • I am in one of the following risk group, and I haven’t completed the 3-dose vaccination series against hepatitis B.
    1. I have with a person who has long- term hepatitis B virus infection.
    2. I am or will be on kidney dialysis.
    3. I am a sex partner of a person with hepatitis B
    4. I have been diagnosed with HIV or a sexually transmitted disease
    5. I have chronic liver disease
    6. I am sexually active and am not in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship.
    7. I am a healthcare or public safety worker who is exposed to blood or body fluids.

Measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccination

  • I was born in 1960 or later and never received a dose of MMR.
  • I am a women thinking about a future pregnancy and do not know if I’m immune to rubella.
  • I am included in one of the following groups for whom 2 chooses of MMR are recommended. But I have received only I dose of MMR.
  • I am a healthcare worker
  • I travel internationally
    1. I had a blood test to measles, mumps or rubella.
    2. I travel inter nationally
    3. I had blood test that show I do not have immunity to measles, mumps or rubella.

Chickenpox (varicella) vaccination

  • I was born in 1980 or later and have never had chickenpox disease or varicella vaccination or I just don’t know my status.
  • I was born before 1980 and I am not sure if had vaccination or if I had chickenpox or not.
  • I may become pregnant and do not know if I am immune to chickenpox.
